MCMENAMIN'S EDGEFIELD HOTEL

EDGEFIELD HISTORY
From rags to riches

As hard as it may be to believe today, Edgefield, built in 1911, served for several decades as the Multnomah County Poor Farm. Residents operated a self-sufficient environment, raising hogs, poultry, growing a variety of fruits and vegetables, operating a dairy, cannery and meat packing plant as well as working in the laundry, kitchen and hospital.

In 1947, it was renamed the Multnomah County Home and Farm and in the late fifties the farm operation was eliminated. In 1962, the facility was renamed Edgefield Manor and for the last two decades of operation, functioned as a nursing home and eventually closed in 1982.

McMenamins purchased the property from Multnomah County in 1990. In phases lasting over four years, the condemned buildings and land were transformed into a unique European-style village, including lodging, a pub with a movie theater, fine dining, a winery, a brewery, distillery, golf course, gardens, vineyards, artwork, meeting, wedding and banquet space, and special events year round.

The historic Georgian-revival style Manor dominates the village atmosphere and is surrounded by numerous smaller buildings that now share a role in entertaining visitors. Local artists showcase their artwork on doors, walls, and ceilings celebrating the history of Edgefield and the Columbia Gorge. The sculpted grounds and gardens tie the 25 acres together, making Edgefield a warm, relaxing and enchanting place to visit.

For more information on the history of the poor farm, Edgefield offers a fantastic book called "Vintage Edgefield - A History of the Multnomah County Poor Farm and McMenamins Edgefield." Written by local historian, Sharon Nesbitt, the book combines factual history with humor and is incredibly entertaining and is available for purchase at McMenamins Online Shop.

The above history is taken directly from the McMenamins history site for the Edgefield Hotel.  Engine Thirty EVP greatly enjoyed our brief stay at this historic hotel.  Weather your looking for ghosts (of which there appears to be a plethora), or just looking for a fun, relaxing vacation, this is the spot.

THE EVP'S

This EVP was captured in room 37.  A woman says "all right"

This EVP was captured in the library.  It sounds like a young lady saying "momma".  We heard this on three separate occasions and seemed to be directed at Liz, one of the investigators.

This EVP was captured on Liz's recorder in room 37.  Again, the young lady is saying "Momma".

This EVP was captured in the stairwell across from Room 37.  A woman says "Is anybody out there anymore?", followed by a man's response "Nope, they're gone".

This EVP was captured in the stairwell across from Room 37.  The investigator asks "is there anybody?" and someone responds "Not me".

This EVP was heard in the stairwell across from room 37.  The investigator asks if anyone can tell us there name.  The response is Aldava.

This EVP was captured as we walked into Room 37.  A woman is saying "I need to know".  We're not sure what she needed to know, but it was a good EVP.

This EVP was captured in room 37.  A man tells us his name is "Mr. Hand".  A subsequent search of census records in Multnomah County resulted in several listings for a Mr. Hand; however, we did find a listing for a Henry and Aldava Hand.

This EVP was captured in the stairwell across from Room 37.  Again, we hear a young lady saying "Mom" on Liz's recorder.

Just a quick note on "orbs".  Many paranormal investigators feel orbs are the beginning of a spirit manifestation.  Engine Thirty EVP does not necessarily hold this view, nor do we have any definitive proof that this is the case. We suspect the orbs in these photos to be light anomolies or dust, but have decided to post them for open comment and feedback on what they might be.  We are not professional photographers and are still in the process of learning about photography.  That being said, Engine Thirty EVP would welcome a professional photographer to our team. If anyone is interested, please contact us at enginethirtyevp@aol.com

Outside the Brewery on the porch.  Prior to this photo, Stephanie noticed a shadow move across the porch.  The photo taken shows a young man in period clothing. For your convenience, we have circled the manifestation in red.

This is the manifestation. We used our photo editing program to lighten the area, for easier viewing.

We finished with a lightened background color- to really pull out the shape of the manifestation.
